Online Merit Badge Classes 2020

IN THE SAME BOAT: a blog for Scouts BSA parents

It is certainly a trying time to be in Scouts BSA these days, what with stay-at-home orders and social distancing requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scouts who are working on rank advancement need to be creative, at the very least!

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has a web page titled Scouting at Home that provides resources to help parents and leaders support Scouting at home. Resources include ScoutingWire TV and Scouts BSA challenges. The BSA's official blog for BSA adult leaders, Bryan on Scouting, is another great place to find news and resources related to COVID-19 and its impact on Scouting. A recent blog contains a list of 58 merit badges Scouts can complete at home, while another helps you find the gear your Scout might need for some of these badges, from ScoutShop.org (the BSA’s official online store):

Although in-person merit badge classes are on hold most everywhere, there are many Councils that are offering virtual, online merit badge classes. Youth protection policies must be followed, even for online meetings. For the BSA’s Online and Social Media Guidelines, visit https://scoutingwire.org/social-media-guidelines.

Unless otherwise noted, the virtual, online merit badge classes offered by the following Councils are available to any Scout(s) from any Council, and are free. I have noted any fees I have seen. I highly recommend that you and your Scout take some time to look around the various Council offerings for merit badges s/he is interested in.
